The Carolina Velodrome Association formed in 2001 after several local cyclists met to develop a plan to bring a velodrome to the Carolinas. This group, based in Charlotte, NC, entered into discussions with the City of Rock Hill (SC) about the velodrome project.
After years of development, including conducting economic impact studies, securing significant private funding, and most recently working with a developer to include the velodrome into a large-scale, mixed use development just off I-77 in Rock Hill, the CVA is nearing the final stages to approval of the project as the next sports venue in Rock Hill.
Many hurdles remain, and the CVA is working closely with the City of Rock Hill to achieve certain requirements and milestones requested and required by the City Council. The CVA is fully confident that these milestones can be met, but we need to hear YOUR voice, whether you are a cyclist, inline skater, r/c car enthusiast, or any of the many different groups that would enjoy having the velodrome open for your enjoyment and use.
Please contact us to get involved. The current timeline would place a build date of summer 2010 if City Council understands the needs and wishes of the potential users, and subsequently approves the milestones and requirements through a Memorandum of Understanding with the CVA.
Once again, the CVA has made significant strides and has presented a compelling case, both financially and with respect to the impact on the community, but showing the community interest and support is a most important element that is needed NOW.
